Getting the Boot: Tall Boots for the Not-so-Tall Girl

First things first -- It's been "forever and a day" since I've written a blog post and, for that, I do apologize. To say that my first year as an attorney was crazy busy every single day of every single week is a huge understatement. That said, I do want to continue this blog (though I think I'll take it in a slightly different direction so that I can actually work it into my busy schedule, so stay tuned for more on that later...)

But for now, I wanted to tell you about what's been on my mind lately, namely finding the perfect tall boot!

It dawned on me a few months ago that I have never had a great pair of tall boots. Sure, I had an el cheapo pair back in college, and I even made an impulsive splurge a few years back on a pair that I've never even worn outside the house. But that has been the extent of my tall boot collection. But I love the whole skinny jeans 'n boots look -- and even the look of a great pair of boots with a nice skirt or dress -- but I've never had the raw materials to pull it off. But now I'm on a mission to change this.

Of course, as petites, boot shopping can be challenging. The shaft can't be too high. The calf circumference can't be too wide. And it has to fit -- and comfortably so! Oh, and did I mention that I need a boot that won't wreck my budget? All of this can make finding the perfect tall boot can seem like a tall order! But I am officially on the hunt.

I was channel surfing tonight (taking full advantage of a rare moment to just relax and unwind) when I spied a commercial for "How Do I Look?" on Style Network. The show is hosted by petite powerhouse Jeannie Mai (who is rumored to be 5'4"), and I have fallen in love with her style. She is my new fashion inspiration! Missing In Action: At A Crossroads

Dear readers, let me apologize for being MIA for the past several months. SO much has happened in my life that I haven't had a lot of time to update this blog. For starters, I passed the Bar, moved back home temporarily with the 'rents, got a summer retail job, found the perfect apartment, moved to a new state, got sworn in as an attorney, and started my first real legal gig (which has been working an INSANE number of hours each week). And that's the Cliff Note's version!

And now, dear readers, I find myself at a crossroads. I'm really not sure what to do with this blog. Do I continue it, knowing that my posts will be more irregular and sporadic than I'd like? Or do I bow out gracefully and just be content to support the growing number of (yay!) petite fashionistas who are heating up the blogosphere?

If I continue it, do I transform it into a fashion blog that chronicles my outfits of the day? Or should I be worried that my clients won't be so amused if they stumble across their lawyer's daily fashion fix? ::sigh:: Decisions, decisions...

inJEANius: Joe's Jeans Provocateur Petite

All of these petite denim giveaways of late has reminded me that I really do need a good pair of denim jeans right now. It's been three to four years since I got my last favorite pairs, but I've outgrown or simply outworn almost all of those. I need to expand my collection with two or three carefully selected pairs, but I know how hard it is for me to find good denim. (Note to self: One day do a post telling readers about how you found your favorite old pairs.)

Right now I'm in desperate need of some good denim. They have to be cute enough for weekend wear but professional enough that I could take them to the office if my new job ever has a casual Friday. (Fingers crossed!) So I'm wondering - has anyone ever tried the Provocateur line from Joe's Jeans? I see that several washes from the petite line are on sale through Wednesday at Hautelook (click here if you need a referral invite) for a mere $79. This price gets me super excited, and I'm thinking about giving them a shot. The only thing is - I'm not sure how this line fits. And I hate that I can't get my money back (only store credit) if the jeans turn out to be duds. So, petite readers, has anyone else had experience with Joe's Jeans? Floating On Air: How I Met My Sole-Mate ♥

Oh. My. GOODNESS! I think I'm in love.

Who's the lucky guy? His name is Cole. Cole Haan Air Talhia Pump, to be exact. But I call him Cole Haan for short. And this is our love story --

Last Saturday was shaping up to be a relaxing, uneventful weekend. After all, I was only one week into my move back to my parents' house for the summer and recovery from the ~~terror~~ ~~hazing~~ ritual otherwise known as the "Bar Exam." All was well. I had no plans. Nowhere to go. Nothing to do. Nothing to see. No fancy clothes. No make-up. No mani/pedi. It was just me and my laptop settling in for a few hours of much needed r&r.

Now, I've always heard that you find love when you least expect it. Well, on this particular day, I was certainly not looking. I was just mindlessly surfing the 'net without any expectations whatsoever. But then--in the blink of an eye--my life changed forever. For that's when Alterations Needed introduced me to the love of my life. The one I had been waiting for all these years. The one I longed for, but could never seem to find. The one I was convinced had to be out there, waiting for me too. It was like a dream come true. And ladies, let me tell you, it was love at first sight! My heart literally skipped a beat. Besides, I would never forgive myself if I let him get away. I knew there was something special about this Cole Haan fellow, and I had to see him again. And soon! Well, Cole must have been pretty eager to see me too. In fact, he showed up on my doorstep even earlier than I expected.

How was it, you ask? A lady never tells...

Oh, ok -- I'll let you in on a few juicy details. Our first meet-up was great! Better than I could have ever expected. See, I wasn't too sure of what to expect at first. Up close, Cole kind of reminded me of this guy I'd met before named Ralph Lauren. In fact, the two were strikingly similar. Ralph and I hadn't hit it off though because I could tell within the first few minutes that he just wasn't a good fit. But in coming face to face with his Cole Haan look-alike, I had a strange sense of deja vu. Perhaps I'd made a mistake. Perhaps Cole wasn't going to be as wonderful as I'd thought he would be. After all, I've had a string of bad luck in the past with lots of other guys (ironically!) named Cole Haan. What would make me think that this time would be any different? A million doubts and questions suddenly began to fill my head. But Cole was patient and understanding with me. He begged me to just give him a try. He was confident that he could win my affections. He promised that he was different from all those other Coles.

And you know what, dear readers? He was different. This new Cole was...well, everything his predecessors weren't. The new Cole was more than just another pretty face. He was stylish. And supportive. And flexible. And sophisticated. And strong. We complemented each other quite well. And I felt very comfortable with him right from the start. I felt like we could go anywhere together -- dancing, dinner, a movie, you name it! Cole made me feel like a million bucks while we were together. I literally felt like I was floating on air! Plus everyone who saw us said we made such a cute pair! Is it any wonder then that I fell head over heels in love with Cole Haan on our very first date? Things went so well that I didn't want the fun to end. So I quickly asked him if I could see him again and, being the perfect gentleman, he obliged.

So we had a second date. (Even cuter this time, eh?)

Now, you might be thinking, "Whoa, Ms. Shopportunity! Slow down a bit. You two hardly know each other and are moving kind of fast." And if you thought that, you'd be right. But I know a good catch when I see one. I also know that there are plenty of other size 7M fish in the sea who would scoop up my beloved Cole in a heartbeat. I just can't take that chance; the disappointment would be too much for me to bear. After all, I've already grown tired of the chase. Tired of the hunt. But just when I thought all hope was lost, my perfect match and I finally crossed paths. And the rest is history.

But make no mistake about it, dear readers. Just because a girl is smitten doesn't mean she can't be smart too. I have already outlined the terms of our relationship with Cole. He knows where I stand (literally) on the things that matter most to me in a mate. We're going to take it slow from this point on. You know, really get to know each other and everything. He understands that I get 1-year to evaluate our relationship and that I won't hesitate to send him packing if I start to feel pressured, stifled, or unsupported. But for now, I'm not thinking about any of that. The only thing on my mind is planning the perfect outfits to wear when I get to paint the town ~~red~~ chocolate (or aubergine or ironstone) with my newfound love, Cole Haan!

Maxing Out: A Tale of Two Dresses

So a few months ago, I lamented the petite woman's plight in finding the perfect maxi dress. Since that time, I've found two--count 'em TWO--maxi dresses that my petite, five foot frame actually loves.

Dress 1

Designer: Macy's INC International Concepts
Price: ~~$89.99~~ $69.99 + 99¢ shipping

Description: In a dramatic ankle-length silhouette and paisley print, INC's petite maxi dress strikes an elegant pose.

The Lowdown: I tried this dress on in size Petite/Petite at the start of the summer. I loved, loved, LOVED it, but still could not justify paying nearly $90 for a summer-y dress. Since then, I have been keeping my eye on Macy's website to see if the price drops. Well, I just recently saw it listed at $69.99. This is still not low enough for me yet (but see Dress 2 below), but I'm holding out hope that I'll eventually be able to pick up this dress for $40 or less. If I do, dear readers, I'll model it for you in a future post. For now though, here's the scoop:

Pros:

Machine washable (no pesky dry-cleaning bills)
Made of polyester/spandex (no pesky ironing either)
Sleeveless with bra-friendly straps (because peeking bra straps are a no-no!)
Built-in soft cups (in fact, we A-cup petites could probably go bra-less altogether)
Appx 42.5" from backline to floor (FIRST and ONLY maxi dress that I wouldn't have to hem)
Paisley print (pattern is fun yet sophisticated, and it complements my skin tone nicely)

Cons:

Price (maybe it's just me, but I don't want to pay $70 for a polyester dress...)
Fabric at bust (a slight white shines through -- visible on hanger, but not so much when you put the dress on)

Final Verdict: I'll buy it when the price comes down!

Dress 2

Designer: Banana Republic
Price: ~~$130~~ $69.99

Description: A silky blend of rayon and spandex makes this dress comfortable as it is stylish. Knotted halter straps, a deep v-neck and an empire waist give it a sexy, summertime ease. Our designers added a touch of navy for an unexpected twist.

The Lowdown: I tried this dress on in size XSP yesterday. OHMIGOODNESS! It is L-O-V-E-L-Y!!! I felt oh so sophisticated and effortlessly chic the second I slipped it on. (Sorry, no dressing room pics. But I'm buying an iphone when I start making a salary in a few months, so I'll rectify that moving forward.) The dress feels like pure silk against your skin, and it had such clean lines and a beautiful drape! There was no way I could walk out the store without it -- even despite the hefty price tag. So you know what that means? It means I'm the proud owner of my very first maxi dress ever! :-) Now all I need is a bit of tailoring (see Cons below) and the perfect little sandal to complete the look.

Pros:

Made of rayon/spandex (but feels silky like super-soft jersey)
V-neck with knotted halter (perfect to show off toned shoulders and arms)
Empire waist (I felt like my legs were a mile-long when I caught a glimpse in the mirror)
Color (stunning shade of gray with a pop of blue along the halter back -- it's GORGEOUS!)

Cons:

Length (it was about 2 inches too long for my 5-foot frame, but my dad's tailor is going to fix this for me)
Dryclean only (oh phooey!)
No built-in cups (a little surprising that BR left this detail out)
Sold out online (but you can check your local store for it like I did)

Final Verdict: Had to have it! Will be a go-to staple dress in the summertime!

Sweating It: Workouts for Gym-phobic Petites

Hello again, everyone! Sorry I haven't been able to blog lately. Things have been absolutely crazy on my end for a few months now. In May, I moved to a new city the day after my law school graduation. Then I started studying for the Bar Exam (which I took this week - yay!) that same weekend. Needless to say, it has been a looooooooong stressful summer of going to bar review class, creating outlines, making flash cards, taking practice exams, and memorizing much more law than I ever thought possible! Unfortunately, my new study schedule wreaked havoc on my regular routines. I didn't sleep much. I didn't eat well. I haven't kept up with current events. Some days I barely even saw the sun. But one thing helped me keep my sanity this summer: Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred DVD!

I love, love, ♥LOVE♥ this video. I don't know about you, but I'm not really a "gym" girl. I like to move and be active, but the thought of running several miles on a treadmill or spinning on a bike going nowhere does not appeal to me. I'd much rather go for a long walk, go dancing, play Lasertag or do something else that makes me sweat in a natural way. After all, I'm not trying to lose weight, but rather just trying to look and feel as good as I can. So I ordered this "30 Day Shred" DVD (after reading some of the nearly 2,000 FANTABULOUS reviews of it on Amazon) in an effort to squeeze a quick workout into each day. All I have to say is -- TWO THUMBS UP!

Thanks to Jillian, I am toning and shaping up right in the comfort of my own home. I have never sweat so hard in my life and had such a great time doing it! Sure, you will feel at times like you want to quit, but that's when the personal trainer in Jillian really comes out. She's right there, motivating you to keep pushing and keep going. And when you do, it feels so good! After doing the Level 1 workout just a few times, I could immediately see more definition in my shoulders and toning in my arms. (I'll post pics some day so you can see for yourself.) After 20 minutes of her signature "3 minutes Strength - 2 minutes Cardio - 1 minute Abs" circuits, you will be both exhausted and exhilarated at the same time.

If you're like me, you can camp out in Level 1 for awhile until you feel ready to move on. My roomie (who works out daily and is in way better shape than I) found even Level 2 to be a true challenge for her. I haven't even looked at Level 3 yet! But I know that if I continue to push myself each week, I'll be there in no time! So no matter where you are with your fitness goals, I guarantee you that this video would help you keep your petite frame looking "nothing short of amazing."

Warming Up: Oven Mitts for Petites

Petite actress and philanthropist Holly Robinson-Peete competed in the final round of Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice last night. Getting A Leg Up: Pantyhose for Petites

We all know the feeling. It's that unsettling feeling we get in the pit of our stomachs. It's the uncomfortable feeling that we get in the small of our backs. It's the feeling that results from the so-called "waistband" of our pantyhose actually coming to rest at some point between our bras and our bellybuttons. Yes, that's the all-too-familiar feeling of hosiery that was not designed with a petite woman's proportions in mind. And with at least 40% of women in this country standing at 5'4" or less, you'd think that hosiery manufacturers would be more sensitive to the needs of us shorter women. Sadly, they are not. But all hope is not lost! Thanks to TheFind.com, I learned that Hanes has actually created a line of petites and petites-plus hosiery designed especially for us! (They are only available in basic colors, but, hey, it's a start!) Admittedly, I'm not sure whether the lines have been discontinued, as these special sizes are not sold directly on the Hanes.com website. But for now, I suggest you stock up on the pairs you find at third-party sites. (TheFind.com also links to a few more vendors.) With a pair of petite pantyhose, our legs can truly look and feel "nothing short of amazing!"

Feeling Our Pain: Size Matters for Guys 5'8" and Under

Let's face it! There are a lot of things that you just can't share with the men in your life. The XY chromosome set will never fully understand certain mysteries of our womanhood. Like our PMS. Or why we're grossed out by all things creepy, crawly, and/or slimy. Or why we tend to go to the restroom in packs. Building A Ridiculously Fabulous, Uber Stylish Petite Wardrobe

After years and years of wearing Catholic school uniforms, rubber-soled shoes, and (gasp!) no make-up, I was a definitely a little fashion challenged! And after a couple of years working in the non-profit sector -- I was also a little cash-strapped.

For me, these two forces converged in a way that wreaked havoc on my personal style. Most of my clothes were in unflattering colors and in unflattering styles. And to make matters worse, shopping for new clothes was downright discouraging! The clothes that caught my eye weren't made for petite women, and the few pieces that were looked like they came with an AARP subscription and coupon for a free denture cleaning! So I found myself stuck in a virtual no man's land -- too mature for the juniors department, too short for the regular women's department, and too alive for the petites department. I was only twenty-something, and shopping was an exercise in futility!

My urge for a little retail therapy was satisfied every now and then with a random purchase from a sale or clearance rack. But --

I bought items that didn't fit.
I bought items that wouldn't last.
I bought items I didn't love.

And more often than not, that same item could usually be found hanging in my closet -- tags still on -- many months or even years later. And as I approached the quarter-century mark, it dawned on me that I was creating a wardrobe full of clothes that made me feel anything but fabulous, stylish, and amazing!

But not so anymore!! For the past few years, I've been revamping and revitalizing my petites wardrobe one piece at a time. I've been searching high and low for petite inspiration, and I've created this blog to share what I've found. My journey hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it! And here's my first little secret for any petite woman who wants to get on the road to fashion recovery...

Read a book!

It's a bit anti-climactic, I'll admit, but it's the truth. Once I was finally determined to break out of my style rut, I began to devour books about the basics of building a great wardrobe. After all, there was something I had to be doing wrong. But I didn't know what. So I took a little time to listen to the experts. And in so doing, I learned a number of things -- about the shape of my body, the clothing styles that would (and would not!) flatter my shape, what to look for when shopping, how to clean and store clothes properly, when to splurge and when to save on an item, etc. And what I learned has literally changed the way I shop and, ultimately, the way I look and feel.

So, dear reader, this blog will begin where my own journey to petite fabulousness began -- with a few of my favorite reads!
